Heidelberg

Saturday, June 14, 2025 - 8:00amHeidelberg, Germany

Breakfast

Waking up in Heidelberg was one of the most relaxing mornings — one of the few days we didn’t have anything firm planned or another place to be. We ventured out to find breakfast.

  • SOO good
  • great coffee
  • fresh options I had an amazing Yogurt fruit bowl
  • Tyler loved the pancakes

Shopping

Back to the hotel to gather some things for the day.

Leaving the hotel - we spotted this McLaren. By now the kids were like, “ok. cool.”

We decided to visit the Heidelberg Castle, one of the main tourist attractions for the city. On the walk over, we — somewhat accidentally — discovered die Hauptstraße , this amazingly long street of shops, cafés, etc. I find it hilarious since the street name is German for “The Main Street” - and almost EVERY town has one similar.

We enjoyed some shopping and casual walking our way to the castle entrance.

Castle Tour

By now the temperature had risen substantially. It was easily the hottest it had been on the whole trip.

The “10 minute moderaterly-steep cobblestone path or steps” sounded miserable.

Normally...

Normally, I’m the “let’s take in the full experience” kind of guy…but even for me it was getting a little toasty.

We opted to take the tram.

You get off the tram, and after a few steps, you immediately come upon a view of the city. Gorgeous.

Panoramic view of Heidelberg from the castle

The castle was cool, lots of history and some good photography.

We probably would have explored the area a bit more, but we were cookin’ and needed to cool off.

Lunch in the Castle

We found some shade at the little food/Café and had a snack/beer.

Then decided to make our way back down.

More Shopping

A few days earlier, shopping would have equaled whining . Not only were the kids settling into the routine of travel , I think they might even be becoming friends!

Tyler and Max walking and talking together

Best friends

I’m only half-joking about becoming friends! Tyler and Max are already best friends.

We stopped in a few shops we saw along the way and picked up some gifts for friends and family.

We even bought another backpack to carry on the plane with all our souvenirs!

Dinner in the Park

We found this awesome park the day before and decided to do like everyone else and bring pizza & beer (for dad) and just relax.

Pizza from Schulzi

It ended up being one of our favorite nights on the trip.

Park along the river

The pizza was so GOOD!

Sunset Photography

After dinner, Tyler and I ventured away for some sunset photography. I already had a few places in mind.

We ventured up a STEEP hill to a little park with a beautiful view of the city below and across the river.

Grocery Shopping

The next day would be casual as well, but a longer drive day. Unfortunately, it was on a Sunday — and almost everything in Germany is closed on Sundays.

So, while Tyler and I were taking pictures, Lori and Max went to get some groceries.

One can only imagine what those two have tee’d up for our car-lunches the next day…

This is the hottest I’ve ever been in my life
